by Stephen Zborovski:
Late at night on Tuesday, April 24 a friend an I were playing pool at the Annex Billiards (507 Bloor St. W). Suddenly, while talking about dating and other things of that nature, the man playing at the table next to us looks in our direction and says “oh give me a break!” He then leaves the table and goes to speak to the management of the pool hall. He soon returns and begins to pack up the table. He then begins to tell us that although this is Toronto and he’s fine with “all that shit” he shouldn’t have to listen to the “disgusting, perverse” things we were talking about and closes by saying that our promiscuous ways are the cause of the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Thinking that these were isolated thoughts of a misinformed individual we continued our game. However, we were soon interrupted by the manager who explained to us that signs posted around the hall indicate that foul and disrespectful language shouldn’t be used in the pool hall. We politely explained that we were using no such language and, in fact, had not uttered a single foul word. We were then told that this was a “family” location and that they would like to keep it that way and that our topic of conversation was not appreciated. When asked if by family he meant homophobic, the manager responded with “well if that’s what you call it, ok.”
I do not recommend this place.
