Description

Welcome to Factory Theatre’s 37th season of remarkable Canadian theatre! One of Factory’s greatest strengths has always been its eclectic nature, and this year’s program is no exception. To open our season, we’re proud to introduce Toronto audiences to Vern Thiessen with his stunning three-character play, Apple. We’re also excited to bring Siminovitch Prize winner Jillian Keiley’s much heralded production of Robert Chafe’s Tempting Providence to our stage. And, for the several thousand patrons who enjoyed last season’s hit comedy, Escape From Happiness, we’re thrilled to offer another great George F. Walker “East End” play, Better Living. Included in our season are partnerships with some of the city’s most startling and innovative independent theatre companies such as Factory favourites, Theatre Smith-Gilmour, Volcano, and one of the most exciting new companies on the block, fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company.

I look forward to seeing you at the Factory. Enjoy!

Ken Gass
Artistic Director

37 years and counting!

Established in 1970 by current and founding Artistic Director Ken Gass, Factory Theatre was the first company in the nation to devote itself exclusively to producing Canadian plays. For over three decades, Factory has been at the forefront of the national theatre scene, building a theatre predicated on the Canadian playwright. The astonishing success of the Factory has indelibly changed the face of theatre in this country, as indigenous plays are now produced coast to coast. Currently the country’s largest producer of 100% homegrown creations, Factory is truly the home for Canadian theatre.

Factory's achievements lie not only in its historical contributions, but also in its ability to compete in an increasingly competitive cultural marketplace. Recent successes such as the re-visitation of the cannon of George F. Walker, including Suburban Motel and The East End Plays, Leon Aureus’ Banana Boys, co-produced with fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, (which has gone on to national acclaim), Claudia Day’s Trout Stanley (which has received much acclaim in New York City), as well as our record-breaking presentation of Rick Miller and Daniel Brook’s Bigger than Jesus, are a testament to the high-quality productions that Toronto theatre goers have grown to expect when visiting The Factory. Toronto's entertainment scene is now busier than ever, and there is a tremendous demand for the groundbreaking plays that Factory delivers, including such productions such as Adam Pettle's Zadie's Shoes, which was later remounted by Mirvish Productions at The Winter Garden Theatre in Spring 2002 and Florence Gibson's Chalmers Award-winning Belle, later remounted in association with the National Arts Centre, Ottawa.

The Victorian mansion located at the corner of Bathurst and Adelaide Streets in the heart of Toronto’s most rapidly developing district, is Factory’s heritage home, which welcomes upwards of 45,000 patrons on an annual basis.

Each Season, Factory Theatre:

· Presents a varied slate of substantial plays for the discerning theatregoer (an ambitious 6 plays over the 2005-2006 theatrical season)

· Provides artist support through development activities such as the Factory Playwright’s Lab, Playwright Residencies, Youth Internships, and CrossCurrents

· Welcomes high school students throughout Ontario – from high-risk schools to private institutions – for Factory’s interactive education and scholarship program

· Provides support to Toronto’s vibrant independent theatre companies, and hosts high-profile events such as The Fringe and SummerWorks Festivals.

We welcome you to share our passion for supporting great Canadian art and artists – a passion that has been the driving force behind Factory for over three ground-breaking decades!
