About Great Big Theatre Company
Great Big Theatre Company is a community-based children's theatre company founded in 1994. Our goal is to produce professional-quality performances of classic and contemporary children's theatre productions, for the enjoyment of family audiences as well as school groups and community organizations; and also to advance drama education for children and teens by providing educational programs for young people of all ages.
We serve a large area of southwestern Ontario, including Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton, Ancaster, Dundas, Brantford, Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Stoney Creek, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Vaughan and Richmond Hill. Our casts include both adults and kids, and our volunteer stage and production crews are made up of people of all ages and backgrounds. We also offer theatre classes and in-school workshops, summer day camps and March break programs for children and teenagers. Since our inception, over 150,000 kids have been involved in our programs.
GBTC is a registered federal charitable organization and is also registered as a non-profit organization in Ontario. Contributions, donations of materials, and volunteer involvement are always welcome. Tax receipts will be issued for all donations of $ 25 and more.
Our students learn a wide range of acting skills:
Stage performance is the prime goal and focus of all our classes. In our classes, students work at:
Clear speech and stage vocal projection: narration, monologue, dialogue
Musical theatre: rhythm, tone, timing
Dance choreography: mime and experimental movement
Character development
Onstage and backstage technical skills: using real and simulated stage
Stage management and production
Theatrical improvisation: with group participation
Story adaptation and script writing: classic, contemporary and original scripts
Acting before live audiences
We encourage our students to participate in our mainstage productions, as well as in other company activities held throughout the year. There is no additional fee for students selected for our mainstage productions. In addition, there is an end-of-the-year school production showcasing the students' work during the year.
Students develop in confidence, knowledge and technical skills, as well as making new friendships. These qualities are enhanced by the company's season activities aimed at developing a spirit of community participation and cooperation.
