I was told that the dish always met these specifications and that they were always vegan. Of course the next time I went in I found out that I had been lied to. I have several vegetarian friends that had the same experience and only found out the truth from other blogs/web sites that review restaurants. The fault is with the staff/management/owners of the restaurant. They may not know what vegan/vegetarian means but it has been explained to them and they simply lie when it suits them. The food is over rated anyway. For good thai food try "Jean's Vegetarian Kitchen" on Danforth. If desperate try Spring Rolls as at least they understand the terms vegetarian and vegan.

You, as a true "Vegetarian" or someone who truly concern about what you put in your body, should know to let your servers know (regardless of which restaurant you go to) about your special requests. I am sure there are tons of Vegetarian places around Ryserson that will meet your special needs. Try Dominion, I hear that they sell "Salad in a Bowl" there.

I recommend this place.

Not only to me but to those hungry vegetarian Ryerson students. Well let me tell you. I went to check out the newly renovated Salad King and ordered some vegetarian dishes. I asked out of habit to ensure that there would be no chicken or fish stock lurking in my food. Good thing I did. The girl who is the daughter of the owner informed me that some of the dishes labelled vegetarian are made from fish stock. Some days they are made with vegetable stock. So I guess you have a 50/50 chance of remaining a vegetarian at Salad King.

I am getting really frustrated with the stupidity and insensivity of the restaurant staff in this city. Since when was a fish considered a vegetable???? Try reading a book people.

To be more specific I will list the dishes that Salad King falsely lists as vegetarian. Evil Jungle Prince contains fish stock, Emerald Curry sometimes contains fish stock and the Spicy Tofu contains fish stock. Wake up and smell the difference between a living creature and a vegetable. These chefs should be ashamed of themselves.

There are no tables, just benches and you will find yourself sitting next to several strangers. So it's not such a good "intimate dining" place. There is an upstairs area which is more classy but with double the prices for that menu.
I recommend this place.

The way they lay out the place as if they want to pack people as much as they can inside. The staff seems to try to rush you in and out of the restaurant like some restaurant in Chinatown. You can't call this place an authentic Thai cuisine... it isn't.

When I got all the way there they said they do not have chicken fried rice only curry chicken and shrimp. I also place an order for chicken balls and rice and the chicken ball had no sauce. Instead for sweet and sour sauce they gave me ketchup. That is gross. The worst thing about it is I didn't notice until I go back to work. I was never so disappointed about my lunch. I have heard nothing but good things about this place but everytime I go I have bad experiences. Good luck to anyone else that eats there.

Service still manages to be good overall. Living pretty close made it easy to call in an order and go for take out. You always have to battle your way through the line-up however to get to the pick-up counter. Generous portions at a good price. I would recommend the chicken panang.

IT WAS AMAZING! !!!!!! My husband had the best chicken fried rice he had ever tasted, and I had this awesome green melon vinagrette salad and Pad Thai. We have been raving about their food and chic atmosphere to all of our friends ever since, finding any excuse to travel back to Toronto to go again.(Huge plus; located across from 'Sam-the-Record-Man') GO!
I recommend this place.

Oh, for the long lost days of the old Salad King, before Linda and before the stainless steel noise-enhancing renovations that have left the Thai restaurant but a memory of what it once was - a great hang-out spot for fast, cheap, delicious Thai for the cash-strapped starving students and time-strapped lunchtime office workers in-the-know about this hole-in-the-wall that served AMAZING FOOD.

The food is still amazing, the prices reasonable (expect a King's feast for $20.00), but the word is out and Salad King is now packed wall to wall at all times, even at 11 a.m. when they open during the weekdays. Always busy, and since the renovations, always LOUD - everyone sitting elbow to elbow, could be fun if you're the type of person who likes a crush of people and 20 decibel level noise accompanying your meal.

But if ambience is what you're looking for, or at least a little bit of room to eat your meal, head over to The One Thai on Yonge St., or order out!

I do not recommend this place.

The atmosphere is almost always busy, yet always friendly as you commonly find yourself sitting at long tables with several other guests. You'll probably have more luck sitting and eating quickly if you go in smaller groups (best luck with two people.)

I've never had any trouble with service, the waiters & waitresses have always been polite and helpful, and fast. Management as well has always seemed polite.

Prices are very reasonable; few menu items are above nine dollars, and portions are very good for the price.

The food is excellent, the staff is very good and the atmosphere is always interesting. A restaurant you should definitely check out. Although I will stress that it is meant to be almost a fast-food environment, where guests are typically expected to eat, enjoy themselves, and be on their way. So if you feel like staff is pressuring you to leave, remember that there are probably anywhere from two to thirty people who are waiting to eat as well.

Upstairs is a more restaurant feeling atmosphere, where it is typically less crowded, and where they take reservations.

I recommend this place.

The waitress was nice but the managers were rude! I heard one manager tell a waitress to tell people to hurry up and eat because there was a line up.. but I don't think that happened because she didn't say anything like that... and we had our bill arrive 3 minutes after we got our entrees..
The place isn't much for dining coz they cram people so close together.. people you don't even know are sharing a table with you...

I would rather give my business to people that are more courteous!

All their curry dishes are excellent, made to perfection. They are not too sweet, but not tasteless either. I can't explain it with words, you just got to try it.

Its very close to Ryerson, and its always packed 7 days a week at lunch time. So go there either before 11:30, or after 3pm.

I recommend this place.

It was a Saturday afternoon, ~5pm in late June. Me and my friend went in and were directed to sit at a table right beside another table. I wanted to sit side by side, so I asked one of the servers if I can do that and she said yes.
The there came along another server and asked me to go back to where I was seated. I told her I already asked one of the server if I can sit side by side and that server said yes. Then this new server told me that "the server who said yes to me was just a bus boy and she doesn't know what she is saying".
I wonder what kind of services Salad King is providing! The restaurant was not even busy, just 50% filled with customers, and yet, they make their customers to sit face to face in order to save space for NO ONE.
I honestly think that more training should be given to EACH employee before he/she answers customers' question!

I do not recommend this place.

4 out of 4 people found this review helpful. this restaurant is always busy. i think its safe to say that most people enjoy the food and prices and that may be the reason. i really love their pineapple beef, its excellent. they also have great cashew chicken among other things. i go here fairly frequently and have never had a bad experience. tho it does feel kinda cramped like you are eating at a high school cafeteria. for a more restuarant feel go upstairs.
I recommend this place.

It's right across from Ryerson University, so all of the students eat there. There is also a take out section. Upstairs has a more upscale restaurant feel. Price is quite affordable!
