I read a number of posts here that make me think that many of them were posted by other stores.

If you have not been to the store in 2008 everything posted before is no longer current or relevant. The owners in 2007 were going bankrupt and did go bankrupt. The store is no longer owned by them and is no longer dealing with many of the previous suppliers who were selling the cheap Chinese made furniture. This furniture is still widely sold in Toronto so if you want it you can find it easily.

Most of what UpCountry is selling now is made in Canada with less than half of its items imported according to the new owners.

Go to King Street and ask the staff or the owner (he is around quite a bit) anything you want about the furniture. And take what you read elsewhere here with a grain of salt.

I recommend this place.

I guess the expression misery loves company applies here. We too have been the victims of this company to the tune of an $1100 deposit on items ordered last December. We approached visa but since we were over the time limit they could not help us. We were not lucky enough to be in a position to cart things out of the store so I would like to know if anybody has had any success recently in getting some satisfaction. I have considered approaching the wholesalers directly because I did read in the star that Elite designs was trying to fill orders but I suppose if they have been left with monies owing that they will not be in much of a position to help anyone out. I usually follow the adage it ain't over till it's over so I guess I am just waiting for someone to give me the final word.
Thanks and my condolences to others who have been taken by the incompetence of Mr Iwaskiw's ownership and management of Upcountry.

It is an unfortunate situation, knowing the principles, I know that business was a struggle and that the intention was to hang on.

Needless to say, we have orders in work for them and P.O's from customers who will not get shipped. We were their main supplier for mid century modern iconic furniture and will agree to sell directly to customers who lost deposits with UpCountry at a discount. We are typically wholesale only, but will do what we can to help people who have lost money with wholesale pricing.

1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. My lawyer did a little research and the reason why upcountry cannot be found is because it is registered under a different trade name. I think it was Elite, they were the main importers of all their bedroom sets, dining sets, all the imports. Don't hold me to this, but I'm just guessing it's best to know all the details before we pursue this further.

I was able to get my deposit back and my husband and I went to Choice Leather Furniture (our friends recommended them while we were first shopping) BUT we went with Upcountry--so stupid!

Anyway, we went back to Choice ordered the sofa that we've been waiting for since February 2007 and they are getting it to us on Wednesday.

We went with Upcountry because they just looked like a more financially sound store--decor wise and the number of them...BUT I did some checking around and although Choice Leather is a warehouse, they have GREAT feedback from customers, NO disputes on the Better Business Bureau, NO posts like this one on forums...and they don't carry ANY subpar quality products.

Should've just gone with them in the first place. Good luck everyone in getting your deposits back and understanding your position, if you were looking for a sofa, go to Choice Leather, they will take care of you and you will get your furniture!

There is something fishy going on here as I was told by the people currently at Vaughn Mills that they filed on oct 10.
As consumers we are protected under the Consumer protection Act, 2002. look into it, call the Consumer protection Branch 416-326-8800, make a report let them know as they have already received a few calls. They can give you advice on your particular situation.

GOOD LUCK!

1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Upcountry has gone bankrupt as of Tuesday, October 9. I have lost a deposit of over $2400 and did not receive any furniture. I can't believe that they could be so dishonest. Shame on Upcountry and the people who are responsible for this crime of knowingly taking peoples money even though they knew that they were going bankrupt.

4 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Yes folks...it's all true.
Don't fool yourself wishing it won't happen to you. Don't pray that maybe your experience might be different. YOU WILL GET SCREWED!
From what I can tell UpCountry is run by a bunch of monkeys. These monkeys have hired a group of trendy looking men and women to set up a nice looking store, to act as salespeople and then take your money. Here's how it works.
1 they pump up their wares and make you believe you are getting a good deal.
2 they take your money and literally throw your order into the trash
3 they do not order your furniture
4 they do not know what happened to your order
5 they ask you to wait 6-8 weeks even though they know you will not get it any time soon
6 they will get annoyed at you for bothering them about your order
7 they ask you to wait 6-8 weeks even though they know you will not get it any time soon
8 they ask you to wait 6-8 weeks even though they know you will not get it any time soon
9 they thank you for your patience
10 they ask you to wait 6-8 weeks even though they know you will not get it any time soon

If you made the mistake of buying from upcountry before reading this review don't despair...it's not too late. Call your credit card company (hopefully you didn't pay cash), explain the situation, you will get your deposit back. UpCountry will not dispute your credit card company's investigation. Buy your furniture somewhere else and thank upcountry for making you a more careful and weary consumer.

Good luck

14 out of 15 people found this review helpful. I purchased a bedroom set from the Upcountry - Vaughan Mills store in February 2007. The clerk, Trina, checked the computer and said all my items were in stock (a lie). She said the items would be delivered within 2 weeks (another lie). I paid for the items IN FULL on my American Express card (I was so naive!!).

After week 3, the furniture did not arrive. I called the store. Turns out that the bed was not in stock and so they were holding onto all the items in order to do just one delivery. I called them almost weekly thereafter for an update. Most of the time, no one answered the phone. I left messages and no one returned those calls.

To make a very long story short, in June, I demanded a refund. They agreed to give it to me. Of course, nothing was processed on my credit card. I called their finance person, Jean Kim, and she agreed to give me a refund -- took my credit card number and everything and went through the pretense of processing the refund while I was on the phone with her. Of course, nothing was processed on my credit card.

I finally called American Express. They started an investigation through their fraud investigations branch. After 4 weeks, American Express sent us a letter. They gave us a credit on our account for the full amount and stated that the merchant had not responded to any of their requests for information.

For all of you who are having trouble getting delivery from Upcountry, CALL YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY within 90 days of your purchase and report a problem. They will start an investigation and chances are, you will get your money back if the furniture is not delivered.

If Upcountry is as close to bankruptcy as it appears to be, YOU WILL NOT GET ALL YOUR MONEY BACK if the company goes under. You are an unsecured creditor and you will rank very low in priority to all the other suppliers and creditors.

The only way to protect your deposit is to make use of the benefits offered by your credit card company to their card holders. Make use of their fraud/complaints department. Start an investigation. If your furniture order falls through, at least you can get your deposit back.

6 out of 7 people found this review helpful. I was glad when my furniture was late 2 months because there was a delay in taking possession of my new condo downtown(also late two months). But now I am in my condo and it is the 4th month with NO furniture. Well it’s not so funny anymore! I had to let out my anger at the staff on a saterday(there busiest day) to get my 50% deposit back. Took my money and went off furniture shopping again! To my surprise I found another store carrying the same furniture and even better salection around the same price called "furniture Toronto". The website is www.furnituretoronto.com
I was forced to do businesses somewhere else.
I can believe the type of treatment when spending large amounts of money.
I am sure they will go out of business in the near future. I will be writing another review on another website

12 out of 12 people found this review helpful. I am a previous employee of UpCountry Canada, and I just want to let the public know that they should be very careful when making a purchase at one of their stores. All the delivery problems at these stores are not due to manufacturing or supplier problems, but due to the fact that UpCountry has severe financial problems. They do not pay their suppliers so they do not get products, hence the reason the delivery times are so long. Thus, most of the time the furniture is 40% off and that’s because the store needs cash, and will use your money, and then make you wait months for your furniture, which should only take a few weeks. Also, in some instances the employees had to wait a week or more for their salaries, because the company was in such debt.

Most people have the misconception, that because the stores look so great that the products are high quality, but again that’s a misconception! Consumers should be aware of the quality of the products, since about 90% of their lines are made in China, with very poor quality and cost very little to produce. With most of the products there is usually a 300% or more mark-up on the cost price. For instance some dining chairs cost as little as $25 and they are sold at $250 or more…you do the math! In addition, the sales people are instructed to be deceptive about the products, and will lie about lead times, the materials, country of origin, and the quality of the items.

I worked in customer service, and we were always having quality problems, and had to replace customer products on a daily basis. We also had to lie about delivery times and why the products were late or the wrong items were shipped. On some occasions, the wrong products would be deliberately delivered to the customer, so the company would have extra time to get the actual products.

Thus, if you want products with good quality and a timely delivery you should shop elsewhere!

6 out of 7 people found this review helpful. UpCountry has gorgeous furniture.

They have incompetent staff.

My order was delayed for weeks, they lost my payment 6 TIMES (no exaggeration)and when they did finally find my order, they had shipped the wrong colour. Once they realized that they had shipped the wrong colour, they argued with me on the phone as to why I should take it anyway.

I still do not have my furniture, and have no idea when it will be delivered. They have thousands of my dollars.

In my opinion, the people who work at UpCountry are polite, professional, friendly, and completely, utterly clueless. They are of little use if something goes wrong and they have no interest in helping solve a problem.

Please, please, for the love of god do NOT SHOP THERE, EVER!!!
