Mediterra Restaurant & Lounge - September 3, 2006
14 out of 16 people found this review helpful. I went to Mediterra for dinner with some friends and we had a very good time. The restaurant has a great atmosphere, with a village mural covering the back wall and all of their fish on display for your viewing pleasure (actually I wasn't too fond of seeing uncooked fish but some people might like it).

The food was delicious. We started with the octopus appetizer and then I had a delicious Chilean Sea Bass ($26) with grilled veggies, rappini and potatoes. Everone enjoyed their meals, including lobster risotto, shrimp scampi and steak.

The waiter wa great, very friendly and attentive. I would recommend Mediterra if you love seafood and you are looking for a good, slightly pricey dinner.

I recommend this place.

Quiznos Sub - August 28, 2006
9 out of 13 people found this review helpful. If you like hot, toasty subs be sure to check out quiznos subs. Whatever location you go to the quality will be equal, I just happen to have been this one several times.

I especially like their veggie, with guacamole and two types of cheeses - delicious but definitely not good for you. However, stay away from their salads and soups - overpriced and very mediocre.

I recommend this place.

Ichiban Sushi - August 28, 2006
8 out of 13 people found this review helpful. Ichiban is a nice little sushi restaurant located near Harbourfront Centre. I was only there once but the waitress was very nice, the food was enjoyable and prices were reasonable (pretty average as far as sushi places go).

Westin Harbour Castle - August 28, 2006
11 out of 16 people found this review helpful. I would recommend this hotel to you if you are looking for a stay close to harbourfront, the cn tower, the rogers centre and the air canada centre. But, if you are looking for a downtown location with lots of nightlife nearby I would say chose something like the Hyatt, the Mariott, the Hilton or the Sheraton.

If you are lucky, you will get a view of lake Ontario but other then that there is nothing fantastic about the Westin. The rooms are comfortable, and I don't think you will have any problems, we didn't.

I recommend this place.

Sushi-Q - August 28, 2006
5 out of 5 people found this review helpful. Sushi Q's is located in the Eaton Centre's food court. I'm no sushi connoisseur but I do love california rolls or vegetable maki and Sushi Q's has both, in convenient little packages. It probably isn't the best in town but they do have brown rice options, which I love. They are also friendly and helpful. I would say give it a try if you are famished after a long day of shopping.
I recommend this place.

Captain John's - August 28, 2006
2 out of 3 people found this review helpful. This place is one of the worst tourist traps I've ever seen.

Fist of all, they asked us if we had reservations, which we didn't, and then guided us into a dimly lit room with absolutely no windows. Not that we could have looked out from our terrible table right next to the door, which was ridiculous because the place was nearly empty.

I had the Shrimp a la Scampi, which was a ridiculous $34.95 - for a dish that I would describe as adequate at best. I would say save your money and go eat at a restaurant on the pier, one where you can actually see the lake.

I do not recommend this place.

Second Cup - August 27, 2006
1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. The best Second Cup in Toronto for one reason, the view. They have an excellent little patio that looks right out on the water, give it a try if you are craving a coffee on harborfront.

Chocolates & Creams - August 26, 2006
1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. I went to Chocolates and Creams one day because they claimed to have the best ice cream in Toronto and I had to test this out for myself. They have a huge selection of different flavours, like Moose Tracks, Pralines and Cream and other exotic flavour combos - some are even sugar free. I tried some and I have to say it was quite delicious, altough I wouldn't say it was the best I've ever had in Toronto.

They are pretty reasonable, with prices for a small kiddie scoop (which is more then enough for everyone) starting at $2.

They also are the only importers of Manon chocolates from Brussels, which aren't all that great, starting at about $3 for 2 truffles.

I recommend this place.

Crown & Dragon Pub - August 26, 2006
1 out of 3 people found this review helpful. I have been here a couple of times and sat on their small patio for a drink and some hummus with veggies. One thing that makes this pub stand out is the rest is the fact that they have very speedy service and a nice lunch/dinner/appetizer menu. However their patio is not too great, with bad seating, and I wasn't very impressed with their drinks although the food was good.

Varsity Cinemas - August 26, 2006
2 out of 3 people found this review helpful. Varsity is great because it is so close to where I live. Prices are on the high end as far as movie theatres go ($13.50) but the theatres are nice, with comfortable chairs.

You can also try Varsity V.I.P. - which is basically a smaller theatre with bigger seats, fewer people and apparently they serve you some kind of beverage before the film. When I tried it we came in too late for this but overall I would say it's not worth the extra money.

I recommend this place.

Valumart - August 26, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Valumart is tucked away at the bottom of the Manulife Centre, in a very obscure and out of the way place (past LCBO and Pharma Plus). I worked in the Manulife Centre for weeks before I discovered it was there. I was so glad I did because they offer a nice collection of organic produce, cheeses, frozen seafood, etc, etc, and at much cheaper prices then their local grocery competitors (Rabba, Whole Foods, Pusateri's).

They also have a sushi kiosk with brown rice options, you will be pleasantly surprised with the variety they have housed in such a small store. They usually get crowded from 4-6pm so try to get there early if you can.

I recommend this place.

18 Yorkville - August 26, 2006
8 out of 10 people found this review helpful. I stayed at a friend's condo in 18 Yorkville for a few months and I found it to be probably the nicest apartment I've ever lived in.

The concierges are always nice and extremely helpful, the exercise room is great (each machine has its own built-in TV) and they also have steam rooms and a large party room that you can rent out.

I've also found that the building's tenants are all friendly and courteous. The only problem might be the extreme whiteness of the condos (all have white walls and white doors and white cupboards which are easily scuffed). Also, we had problems with our wood floors developing air bubbles underneath. Due to this I question the quality of the building's construction, hence the 4/5 star vote.

I recommend this place.

Royal Ontario Museum - August 25, 2006
4 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Going to the ROM is always a great experience, I think I have been about 4-5 times. I go on Friday nights after 4:30, when it is free, and I have never actually paid to visit! It is usually crowded during this time but not so much so that you can't get a good look at whatever you wish to see.

Last time I was there they had a great collection of Asian art and artifacts. I also enjoyed their Greek art, Jewels and Gemstones and Natural history exhibits.

I recommend this place.

Balzac's Coffee - August 25, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. The best thing about this coffee shop located in the Distillery district is the atmosphere. It is housed in an historic building and gives one the feeling that you have stepped back in time to the 1800s.

They serve a wide variety of coffees and teas (some of which are organic), as well as other soft drinks and lemonade. We both chose their lemonade, which was quite nice. Everything there is overpriced, which can be expected of such a tourist destination.

I recommend this place.

Brick Street Bakery - August 25, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. This little bakery in the Distillery district is very popular! So, seeing a long line we decided to give it a try for lunch.
Their lunch fare consists mainly of sandwiches and, on this occasion, a vegetarian curry (which I tried). Everyone enjoyed their meals, and prices were reasonable.
They don't offer any indoor seating but they have a few outdoor tables which are nice. Their desserts all looked excellent, although we did not partake in any.

I recommend this place.

The Distillery - August 25, 2006
3 out of 5 people found this review helpful. I hadn't heard of the Distillery district until my mother came for a visit and read about it in a TO Tourism magazine. Apparently many movies have been filmed here, including Cinderella Man.

It is definitely an interesting sight, a little untouched piece of Toronto's history, with many galleries, shops and restaurants. However, after seeing the buildings, which didn't take long, there wasn't much left. There is no explanations of what the buildings were used for or any other historical facts. I guess you could find it out on their Segway tours but I will never be lazy enough to use one of those.

If you do decide to go, one fun little shop is Soma Chocolatier, where you can find great gelato.

I do not recommend this place.

Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel - August 25, 2006
1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. I would recommend the Sheraton for one reason and one reason only - they have a nice pool. The pool has both an indoor and outdoor area, which means that it is open year-round and if you are brave, you can even take a dip outside in February!

Other then that, the rooms are average - they do offer robes in every room (but in my opinion they are much too rough to wear). However, the location is good for tourists, right near the Eaton's Centre, Nathan Philips Square and Queen Street shopping.

I recommend this place.

Kensington Bakery - August 25, 2006
0 out of 1 people found this review helpful. I really love this little healthy bakery where you can find such goodies as whole wheat croissants and spelt muffins. I love their large selection of breads- including whole wheat, oat bran, spelt, rye and several are organic as well. They have goodies such as pie, cookies and date squares. All are made with whole grains and no preservatives.

One of the best things about this bakery is the prices. Everything is super-cheap, especially when you compare it to the high prices of natural baked goods in Noah's or Whole Foods.

They also have a selection of vegetarian/vegan meals but I have not tried them

I recommend this place.

MIDI Bistro - August 25, 2006
2 out of 3 people found this review helpful. I really enjoyed my trip to Midi french bistro for lunch. We were the only ones in the restaurant and me and my friend both ordered off of their 'Prix Fixe' menu, which is an entree (quiche, sandwich or salad) with drink and dessert for $15. I had their Market Salad, which was excellent and their cinnamon ice cream for dessert, equally yummy.

The atmosphere is great, very french, and the waitstaff are friendly. Also, you can check out their entire menu on their website.

I recommend this place.

Just Thai - August 25, 2006
5 out of 6 people found this review helpful. I actually lived around the corner from Just Thai for about a year before I finally tried it one rainy day. I was so angry at myself for not trying it earlier!

The food is excellent, with wonderful lunch special that include enough food to feed you for a week. I highly recommend their satays.

The waitstaff was pretty average, especially since we were the only ones in the entire restaurant! However, they were friendly and the atmosphere was nice, and they have a very nice patio if weather permits.

I recommend this place.

John's Italian Cafe Classic Pizza - August 25, 2006
1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Located on Baldwin street, close to the U of T campus, this is a great location for students and faculty. Of all the restaurants on Baldwin, I think this is one of the best. Prices are reasonable, food is excellent and the patio is great (their interior could use a little revamping though, it is a bit cramped).

I came here with two friends and ordered their pasta and panini selections. We were all very happy with our meals. I have also heard that their pizza is fabulous.

I recommend this place.

Margarita's Fiesta Room - August 25, 2006

Beach Fairway - August 24, 2006
2 out of 3 people found this review helpful. I have been to Beach Fairway many many times to hit balls and once to play their cute little mini-golf course. It is great, never too crowded that you can't find a spot to hit some balls and the mini-golf was really fun, not too easy and not too hard for the beginner or child.

Prices are reasonable, I believe an extra-large bucket of balls is $10.50 and mini-gold is $6.50/per person for adults, less for children.

They also offer golf lessons.

I recommend this place.

The Croissant Tree - August 24, 2006
2 out of 4 people found this review helpful. I really like this cafe located near Bloor and Church. They offer breakfast specials, such as French Toast and a great Mushroom and Brie Omelette, which they serve all day ($7-8 w/coffee). They also have a variety of sandwiches, sold with side-salad or without ($7). Their collections of salads is good, with offerings like greek, bean, fruit and tuna, and prices from $3-6 depending on what size you get.

They have an excellent selection of different flavored coffees, like Bavarian Chocolate (my favourite), as well as regular. And, of course, many different croissants to choose from.

I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a quick, inexpensive breakfast or lunch in a casual atmosphere. They have a large, beautiful patio, perfect for warm summer days. Their interior is also nice, with comfortable couches and window-side tables. Also, they offer high-speed internet access.

I recommend this place.

Fairmont Royal York - August 24, 2006
6 out of 7 people found this review helpful. By far the best hotel in Toronto, the Royal York offers luxury accommodations with every amenity imaginable. The rooms are elegant, large and the beds are very comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful as well. The location is perfect for a romantic getaway, downtown near the CN Tower, Rogers Centre and overlooking the lake.

Be sure to try their Fairmont Gold Program - in which you occupy a large room on their 8th floor and are treated to snacks at night, a serve-yourself bar and a morning breakfast buffet.

Cumberland 4 - Alliance Atlantis Cinemas - August 24, 2006
3 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Cumberland 4 is a very small theatre located in Yorkville. As the name suggests, it plays 4 films and they are always independent films. Although their screens are very small and the seating is terrible, they are one of the few places in town that will play notable movies like An Inconvenient Truth and The Road to Guantanamo.

They have a membership program that offers discount film tickets and they are less expensive on Tuesdays.

Scaccia Restaurant - August 22, 2006
3 out of 3 people found this review helpful. Scaccia is located in the Manulife Centre's bottom floor. It is an Italian restaurant serving soups, salads, pasta, pizza and panini.

I have been here twice and had excellent salads both times. My mother also loved their Minestrone soup and their pizzas look delicious.

They are a bit pricey, particularly if you eat in their dining room, with its elegant Italian-inspired decor. The waiterstaff is very friendly.

Noah's Natural Foods - August 21, 2006
2 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Noah's is probably the best health-food store around, if you exclude Whole Foods, you will be pleasantly surprised at the wide variety of organic, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other specialty foods that they carry.

They also carry many bulk foods, like whole wheat flour, quinoa, millet, beans and organic nuts. The prices for these items are very good, and they often put items on sale, like day-old breads. However, like all health food stores, expect to fork over a lot of cash for your groceries. They also have a very limited supply of produce.

I recommend this place.

LA Paloma - August 21, 2006
2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. This is definitely one of the best gelato shops in Toronto, but it is not the best (see Hollywood Gelato).

They have a myriad of different flavors, including Choclate Soya (which I loved) and several yogurts (both of which you won't find at Hollywood Gelato). Their flavors can all be found at their website (lapaloma.ca).

They are pretty expensive - I can't remember how much I spent but I remember thinking it was ridiculous.

Summer's Ice Cream - August 21, 2006
5 out of 6 people found this review helpful. Summer's carries a very large variety of ice creams, yogurts and sorbets - including some sort of non-dairy, sugar-free "ice-cream" (not recommended).

Even though the place is almost always packed on hot summer days, there is nothing particularly outstanding about it. I have tried their Chocolate Yogurt, which pretty much tasted like something store-bought and an odd fudge-mocha flavour which was much too rich (which can be a good thing at times, I know).

The prices are quite high (probably due to its Yorkville location) and the staff is always extremely friendly. I would say give it a try if you're in the neighborhood, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I recommend this place.

Whole Foods Market - August 20, 2006
4 out of 4 people found this review helpful. Okay, I have to admit, my favorite thing about Whole Foods is the samples. If you are lucky you might get samples of exotic cheeses, like mustard seed Gouda, or yummy ripe bing cherries and heirloom tomatoes. At the very least you are guaranteed a bite of rice crisp or popcorn.

But seriously, Whole Foods is a delight for the health conscious consumer or vegetarian. I love their wide variety of organic fruits and veggies, gluten-free products, organic meats and other hard to find foodstuffs. Much of what you'll find is very expensive but you might be surprised, some things are actually less expensive then other health food stores (like Noah's).

I would highly recommend checking out this place for all those products you just can't find anywhere else (like organic cheeses, goat's milk, corn tortillas, rice pasta, organic soy yogurt, and etc., etc.)

I recommend this place.

Red Lobster Restaurants - August 20, 2006
5 out of 6 people found this review helpful. I have been to this Red Lobster more times then I could possibly count and every time it is a good experience. The menu hardly ever changes and the food tastes the same as every other Red Lobster in the country but at least it is reliable.

If you've never been to a Red Lobster be prepared for lots of butter and a lot of fish (if you hadn't guessed by the name). I would recommend the garlic shrimp, grilled salmon and crab legs. Oh, and the brownie sundae for dessert, yummy.

Pusateri's - August 20, 2006
6 out of 10 people found this review helpful. I don't understand why people come here! Please elucidate to me, because I have lived next-door for some time and I never go unless it is an emergency (like I desperately need a $6 gallon of milk I could get at Rabba for $4).

Everything is overpriced, and you can get it all within a short distance for much less (Rabba, Valu-Mart, even Whole Foods for some things). So why oh why, with the rude staff and mediocre coffee bar do people crowd into this place like it is some kind of mecca of gourmet food?

Could it be the pre-made foods? I have tried some, including their salads, and I was not at all impressed. So what is it? I know they sell goodies from Wanda's Pie in the Sky, which are delicious, but don't you all know the actual shop where they make them is less then a block away?

I do not recommend this place.

Pi-Tom Thai Cuisine - August 20, 2006
1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. I had never tried authentic Thai food before I came to Pi-Tom's and now it is one of my favorite foods! I am a vegetarian and so I've tried almost all of their Tofu and Vegetable dishes, such as Lemongrass Tofu and Spicy Eggplant. They also make a great spicy pumpkin soup, very creamy. Prices are reasonable too.

They aren't often crowded, except weekdays at lunch time due to the business crowds. The waitstaff is always kind and attentive and their indoor atmosphere is surprisingly elegant - but the patio could use a makeover. I wouldn't sit out there unless I was a smoker.

I recommend this place.

Le Commensal Fine Vegetarian Cuisine - August 19, 2006
1 out of 3 people found this review helpful. I went to Le Commensal not really knowing what to expect. I knew it was vegetarian and I had heard only good things so I was very excited to try it. I was disappointed.

What they don't tell you, until you get in, is that this is not your traditional buffet. You have to chose your food and then they weigh it and charge accordingly. They have both a hot and cold buffet. I stuck to the cold buffet, and loaded up on small portions of various pre-mixed salads and sprouts. My total came to around $10 minus my drink (and I didn't take very much, in fact I was still hungry after I finished).

The salads were mediocre at best, and most weren't even organic. Also, the make-your-own salad portion was extremely lacking, relying mostly on partly sprouted legumes and beans. I understand that they are very good for you but they do not taste good at all!

Would I recommend this place to a friend? Well maybe, if they are vegetarian, love buffets, have lots of money to blow and are a health nut. I don't have any friends like though.

I do not recommend this place.

City Grill - August 19, 2006
3 out of 4 people found this review helpful. I came to City Grill one day for brunch. The waitress was extremely nice but the rest of the experience was just average. I had a vegetable omelette and it was pretty tasteless. They are one of those restaurants that carries just about every type of food imaginable, from pad thai to panini - so I guess you could call it Canadian food.

They do have a lovely patio however, so they might be a good choice if your famished after a long shopping excursion and don't want the usual food court fare. Prices are pretty reasonable, with sandwiches and paninis starting at around $9-12.

Civello Salon & Spa - August 17, 2006
10 out of 13 people found this review helpful. I recently got a cut and style at Civello by one of their advanced stylists. I had a great experience. The staff was friendly and attentive, I loved their quick head and shoulder massage before they cut my hair and the stylist (I believe his name was Josef) was excellent. He listened to what I wanted and the cut turned out perfect, I've received many compliments.
It was quite expensive ($85 for the cut plus he talked me into $60 more for Aveda shampoo and conditioner) but it was well worth it - especially if you do not get your hair cut often.

Studio Cafe Four Seasons - August 14, 2006
3 out of 6 people found this review helpful. Although I believe that this restaurant was far too pricey for what it offers, I really enjoyed my food and the waitstaff were friendly and attentive (although not overly so, which I hate).
I like that they offer Organic dishes, and my halibut with asparagus and carrots was cooked perfectly ($32). I also tried my friend's lobster risotto ($28), and it was the best I've ever tasted.
However, I was less then impressed with the spiced shrimp appetizer (the shrimp was too salty, the salad too bland) ($19).
I won't be coming back here but I recommend it if you have money to burn.

Golden Griddle Family Restaurants - August 13, 2006
5 out of 6 people found this review helpful. The Golden Griddle near Yonge and Church has its good and bad days (manly bad). The best thing about it is probably the location (near several hotels where it attracts tourists and a few lonely locals).

I usually stick to their omelettes, which are often overcooked and tasteless. You best bet in that department is Spinach and Feta.

They also have a breakfast buffet that offers cereal, muffins, eggs, fruit salad, juices, bacon and various other breakfast meats. Most people go for this option but I have never been a fan of buffets.

The atmosphere is terrible and the service is often slow.

Fresh On Bloor - August 9, 2006

Also, this place was made famous for being Kate Hudson's choice for dining out with Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days!
