The Pickle Barrel still serves up great deli sandwiches (love the Reuben), but the service has been waning; my party of 14 waited nearly 2 hours for a table, didn't see a waiter until 30 minutes had passed, and was only visited three times (orders, drinks, food) before the bill arrived. I came here during Summerlicious ($35 fixed price menu) this past summer, and enjoyed a pretty good meal. Pleasant interior, live oyster shucking, good service and food. The highlight: raw oysters from Ireland, pricey at $4 each, but the best I've ever had.

I'm told this place is Authentic Japanese (not easy to find downtown), but the verdict's still out. I've had a few dishes, like their curry beef with katsu-don ($8 and delicious), and their miso ramen ($6, a little salty). Their menu can get expensive in a hurry though; bento-box combos start at $15. The decor's a little plain, but it's situated nice and tucked away on Charles off of Yonge.

Hard-to-find authentic Japanese cuisine, but don't come here looking for sushi. Tokyo Grill focuses instead of hearty dishes like katsu-don (breaded fried pork on rice) and ramen noodles. Very small and cozy; keep an eye out, or you might walk right by it.

If you're looking for traditional-style dim sum where servers push carts around and yell at you, this is your place. Don't arrive late because the choices will be limited, and the food will have sat around. To be fair, I've had some pretty good meals here, but believe me, the best dim sum's in Markham :)
