Pickle Barrel Atrium - |

The Pickle Barrel still serves up great deli sandwiches (love the Reuben), but the service has been waning; my party of 14 waited nearly 2 hours for a table, didn't see a waiter until 30 minutes had passed, and was only visited three times (orders, drinks, food) before the bill arrived. My recommendation: don't come here with more than 6 people, and stay away from the stir fries. I recommend this place. Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report as Spam |

I came here during Summerlicious ($35 fixed price menu) this past summer, and enjoyed a pretty good meal. Pleasant interior, live oyster shucking, good service and food. The highlight: raw oysters from Ireland, pricey at $4 each, but the best I've ever had.

Tokyo Kitchen - |

I'm told this place is Authentic Japanese (not easy to find downtown), but the verdict's still out. I've had a few dishes, like their curry beef with katsu-don ($8 and delicious), and their miso ramen ($6, a little salty). Their menu can get expensive in a hurry though; bento-box combos start at $15. The decor's a little plain, but it's situated nice and tucked away on Charles off of Yonge.

Hard-to-find authentic Japanese cuisine, but don't come here looking for sushi. Tokyo Grill focuses instead of hearty dishes like katsu-don (breaded fried pork on rice) and ramen noodles. Very small and cozy; keep an eye out, or you might walk right by it.

If you're looking for traditional-style dim sum where servers push carts around and yell at you, this is your place. Don't arrive late because the choices will be limited, and the food will have sat around. To be fair, I've had some pretty good meals here, but believe me, the best dim sum's in Markham :)

Cantonese cuisine in the heart of Chinatown. Huge menu for all budgets - noodle soups and rice combos can be had for $4-5, with more sharing-friendly dishes anywhere from $6-15. Pretty good seafood, but if BBQ's your game, I'd go across the street to King's Noodle. Swatow's pretty busy at dinner (most restaurants in this area are), but I've never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes.

I don't know, I eat at this place fairly often, but it's a bit of a dive. The owners/cooks are friendly, but I don't think I've seen the food at the buffet replaced once in the dozen+ times I've been there. I usually stick to the $3 Chicken Biryani special; it's spicy as hell and you can't beat that price.

Yes, Lahore Tikka House looks like it's operating out of a wood shack, and it is, but their Pakistani cuisine is authentic, spicy, and priced just right. Besides standard fare like biryani and lamb kebabs, it's also one of the few places you'll find stir-fried (gasp) cow's brain. A meal for two should be under $20-25 with tax and tip, depending on your appetite. A must-visit if you're exploring Little India on downtown Toronto's east side.

If you happen to find yourself on Toronto's east end and you're looking for a drink, you can't do much better than Ciros House of Imported Bier. Huge selection of imported beers (100+), friendly staff, and a tasty menu similar to the Green Room's east on Bloor. I've been here a half dozen times, but I always settle on a tall glass of Hacker Pschorr (Czech) and their chicken wrap with tzatziki sauce - delicious.

Crepe It Up has about 2 dozen types of crepes, ranging from sweet (think chocolate, fruits) to savory (cheese, meat), for between $3 and $7 plus tax. I'm not sure if I'd come here for dinner, but they make for an excellent snack. I recommend the "Paris" - bananas and warm chocolate for $4. Crepe it Up also has a second location north of Church and Wellesley.

We came here once for their all you can eat menu. Masa is a pretty good looking joint, but we were totally disappointed by their (lack of) selection - plenty of fried items like katsu-don and tempura, but low on fresh fish. Might come back for their teppanyaki, but that's it.

Jaipur Grille, despite it's French-sounding name, is a popular "business lunch" destination for Indian cuisine near Yonge and Eglinton. The lunch specials range from $6-10, and include all your classics served with either naan or rice - chicken vindaloo, saag paneer, chana masala, and so on. Thumbs up for the decor, which is spacious, bright and pleasantly contemporary with a nice ethnic touch.

Okay, yes, this place is a retail store. But, they also serve delicious made-to-order sandwiches sliced fresh from their deli meats and cheeses behind the counter. I eat here once a week, honest. The owners are wonderful people, and the customer service is excellent. My only complaint? Some of their import products are a little on the pricey side.

Jump Cafe & Bar - |

I came here to celebrate a small company get-together a few weeks back. Starters ranged from $8-14, and entrees between $18-45 - the difference between an upscale burger and a sirloin steak. My choice of entree was soy-glazed black cod served with rice (~$36), and it might have been the most perfectly cooked fish I'd ever eaten. The Jump Cafe is located in the heart of Toronto's financial district, so expect it to be full of power traders and executives after work; might not be your scene. If you're looking for a deal, the restaurant also offers fixed price menus as part of Summerlicious/Winterlicious.

Came here for my last birthday, and walked away all smiles. Gorgeous tapa-style dishes at $8-15 a piece, each with a recommended wine pairing, served in half or full glasses. About 7 dishes (including dessert) was plenty for the two of us; if you're drinking wine, expect to pay around $70-80 each with tax and tip. There's no reservations and very limited seating, so come early or expect to wait as long as an hour or two. I sat at the bar, but if you can, try to grab a place next to the open kitchen; it looks incredible.

Echo Sushi is a decent place with good service and pleasant decor, but the food quality is only par. Then again, should you expect much more from an all-you-can-eat sushi joint? At lunch, complete bento meals can be had for around $7 plus tax.

I've had mixed results here - everywhere between very good and very bad haircuts. I'm always hesitant to come back, but $15 for a men's haircut is pretty solid, and they're a step above Supercuts. One thing worth mentioning - they're paid by the haircut here, not by the hour. As such, don't be surprised if you're rushed out the door. I do not recommend this place. Was this review helpful? Best home-made ice cream in the city, and slightly more affordable than Ben and Jerry's or Baskin Robbins. Greg's features some unique and always-changing flavours - I recommend Lemon Meringue or Roasted Marshmellow. A nice treat in the summertime, but I come year-round.

Authentic Japanese sushi restaurant tucked away behind City Hall; among the best in town. Pleasant, laid back atmosphere. Not for cheapskates - a typical dinner can range anywhere from $15-40 per person, depending on your tastes. If you've got money to burn, try the omakase ($60 and up) - you won't be disappointed.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Chinatown, this little dumpling resto features some lovely Chinese comfort food in an unassuming home-like setting. Aside from your classic dumpling recipes (pork and leek, pork and shrimp, etc.), Mom typically has one or two recipes you can't find elsewhere.

An above-average all-you-can-eat sushi joint. Despite their tiny sashimi portions, they do serve up some nice rolls and have a large selection of items. Above average middle eastern fare, for sit-down or take-out. Decor is contemporary and clean, but nothing special. Menu is pretty typical, with falafels, shwarma, and -- french fries? A little on the pricey side, but their portions are surprisingly large, so you won't be left hungry. As an aside, they have a few other locations downtown. I recommend this place. This place is always busy, but legitimately so. You'd be hard pressed to find similar-quality sushi downtown at the same price. That being said, some might find it too busy - I sometimes feel a little crammed in my seat, and the aisles are taken up by 6-7 waiters on a weeknight.
