The place is nice and the staff are friendly -- though a bit frazzled. The food looked quite good, though I didn't try any on this visit. (The people I was with all enjoyed their meals.) The free WiFi provided by wirelesstoronto.ca is great and worked perfectly. This is definitely a nice place to go for a drink and some food.

I won't lie, the place is a bit of a dive. Most of the customers are a bit sketchy, and some people may find that intimidating. I don't think it's a particularly rough bar, but I haven't spent much time there. I can say that the juke box was playing excellent music when I was there, and that the bar was serving $2 draft beer, and $3 bottles. I think for that price the place is worth checking out -- if you are feeling adventurous. It's not a good first-date venue.

The restaurant recently renovated. It's easily the nicest looking restaurant in Chinatown. It certainly looks out of place. The prices remain the same, so it's a cheap place to get Pho. They now sell a lot of appetizers that are quite good also.

Barberian's Steak House - |

The place is on Elm, just north of the Eaton’s Centre, in a fairly nondescript building/house. The place doesn’t look like your typical haute Steakhouse; one half of the place looks like an old pub, the other half is ever so slightly more fancy. I think the place has a nice feel to it. The room we were in was large enough to seat a fairly big party. There is also seating down in the restaurant’s wine cellar, which is supposed to be quite nice. Barberian’s serves steaks — and a few other things. I don’t think there is much point going there if you aren’t going to buy a steak. The steak I had was amazing, and I am pretty sure everyone else I was with enjoyed theirs. The price of a meal ranged from about $30 – $50 dollars, depending on the entré you got. As Steak places go, I don’t think it’s particularly expensive, and I thought what I had was well worth the money. The wine list at the place is something to behold. The wine my friends and I split was quite tasty. I think Barberian’s caters to a very diverse group of people. It didn’t have the sort of old banker feel other steak places sometimes have. I could certainly see it appealing to that crowd as well, but at the same time they had no issue with a group like ours. There were all sorts of people eating when we arrived. The staff were very helpful throughout the evening. The owner popped by briefly to wish my friend a happy birthday. I found it to be a very friendly place. On the whole I think Barberian’s is well worth checking out. I recommend this place. Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report as Spam |

It's probably the cheapest place in the city to get computer stuff; it's a shame the staff are usually such jerks and the place is so packed.

BANU - |

Banu is hands down the best place I’ve been for Persian kebabs. I’d say Zaffron comes close, but I think they serve much better meat at Banu, and the chef there cooked them just right. Everything we had was really juicy and tasty. Banu only servers kebabs; you won’t be able to get any Persian stews here. The meal was about $42 dollars each when all was said and done. (We split 8 orders of kebabs and a starter between 6 people; 3 of us ordered hard drinks, the others soft drinks.) Compared to other places I’ve eaten at, this is a deal, but compared to other Persian places its a bit pricey. (Shima and I both ate at Darvish for less.) That said, Banu really is a superlative Persian restaurant; I think it’s worth splurging on. Banu a nice looking restaurant with great service and excellent food — what else do you really need?

I haven't been here in years, but it's a pretty nice place. The food is quite good, and the prices are very reasonable. Everything has a Middle Eastern flare to it, but I wouldn't call it a Middle Eastern restaurant. The decor is very simple. It's a long narrow space with an open kitchen. The wait staff are quite friendly. It's definitely a good place to take a date. It's well worth checking out.

Darvish Restaurant Tempus - |

I went to Darvish with my girlfriend last night. I've been looking for a good Persian place downtown for quite some time. Darvish is just North of College on Yonge, in the spot another restaurant called Tempus used to be. (The shop actually goes by both names: Darvish or Tempus.) It’s a moderately sized restaurant, long and rectangular, with an exposed brick wall to your right and mirrors and bench seating on your left. There is a fair amount of seating, so you could accommodate a fairly large group. My girlfriend and I sat at a table for two near the back. We ordered Kashk-e Baadenjaan to start; it’s an eggplant dish I like a lot. I ordered a chicken and beef kebab plate as my main. My girlfriend ordered the Ghormeh Sabzi, which is a Persian stew. We both agreed the chicken kebabs and the kashk-e baadenjaan were excellent, that the beef kebabs were quite good, and that the ghormeh sabzi was a bit watery. I think overall Darvish is a nice place to eat — the fact the food is so cheap is a nice plus. Most of the mains were around the $12 mark, appetizers were under $7. It is definitely worth checking out.

Insomia is a nice little restaurant at the corner of Bathurst and Bloor. It's a good place to go for drinks, or for food. I've been a few times and have yet to be disappointed with the service or the food served. Servings are quite large, and the meals are reasonably priced. (The Mediterranean platter is quite good, and well worth getting.) The place is dimly lit, with lots of small tables, which makes it a nice setting for a date as well. This place is worth checking out.

Schmooze is a fun place to go, which is the most important thing to look for when it comes to picking a place to go. The fact that the decor is nice and on Fridays the drinks are cheap is an added bonus. The crowd that comes out to Schmooze is older, but quite energized for a fun night out. The place gets quite packed on a Friday: they have a big after-work crowd, which thins out just as the late night crowd shows up. If you don't show up after work, be sure to get to Schmooze before 9:00 because the place gets packed quickly. Friday nights are their "cheap drinks" night: at $2.50 a drink, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a cheaper place to drink in the city that was this nice.

Century Room - |

The Century Room has been disappointing both times I've been. It's one of many new lounges that opened up in the newly gentrified King West strip. The area caters to a slightly older crowd than that of the clubbing district. The Century Room place is fairly expensive: drinks are around $7.00 a pop, and there has been cover both times I've been. (Who wants to pay cover to go to a lounge?) There is plenty of seating, though its all reserved for bottle service. There is a reasonably large dance floor at the back of the bar, and a smaller one at the front. The first time I went, the place was fairly empty, and filled with people that looked they came out just to be seen at the Century Room. Expensive drinks in an empty bar isn't a recipe for a good time. The second time I went was a better experience: the music was good, and there was a large crowd out, but it was still missing that something that makes a club worth checking out. I'd skip this place and check out some of the other lounges on the strip. That said, I do think this place is better suited for private parties and corporate events, and would recomend it for such things. I do not recommend this place. Was this review helpful? Caribbean Queen of Patties - |

This has to be one of the best places to get beef patties in the city. The lady who runs the shop makes them fresh several times a day by the looks of things. They are excellent. The shop sells other Jamacian food as well, though I haven't had any yet. There is no place to sit down and eat, the shop is strictly for take-out. Patties are a dollar each, or you can get 12 for 9 dollars.

I've been to Bodega twice: once for brunch, once for dinner. The ambiance of the place is quite nice, and i'd say it's a nice place to go on a date. The food is quite good; they serve an assortment of French dishes. Mains will run you from around 25-35 dollars. The service is usually fairly slow; the servers are friendly and courteous, so I don't think that is a deal-breaker for the place.

Bloom is a brilliant restaurant. It's a gem hidden away in the west end of the city. I have been several times now, and have yet to be disappointed. The interior of the restaurant is quite nice. A handful of tables line the wall along the left side of the restaurant and end at the bar. White brick walls contrast the smooth red ceiling nicely. On the right are a few larger tables and a booth of sorts. The place is dimly lit, which is what makes it look closed from the outside when you peer in through tinted glass. I wanted to steal the chair I was sitting on, but didn’t think I’d be able to sneak it out of the store. The food is great. They have a small menu that changes often. This is a great place to take a date.

Hugh's Room - |

Hugh’s Room is a great venue for concerts. The layout of the building is just right. There is a raised stage in the back right corner of the building. It’s surrounded by tables and chairs, and those tables and chairs are surrounded by another set of tables and chairs, slightly elevated. From almost any spot in the venue you should have a clear view of the band you have come to see. The sound system was also excellent. Judging by the praise from the singers playing the night I went, it may have had as much to do with the sound engineer, Marty, as it did with the speakers and what have you. I haven't tried the food there, but am under the impression it's good.

Centro was amazing. Everything about the place was excellent. The lobster spaghetti which I had was top-notch. My friends enjoyed their food as well. The deserts came in sets of 3 for $12, and the three we picked were particularly good. The ambience of the place was great. We were seated downstairs in the lounge, which was a nice venue in its own right. The upstairs looked great, but were told we would have had to make reservations earlier than we did -- 15 minutes before we showed up. Finally the service was amazing. I don’t recall going to a place where they pamper you as much as they do at Centro.

El Trompo is a Mexican place in Kengsington Market. It’s probably my favourite Mexican place in the city. El Trompo makes a really good Guacamole that you would be remiss not to try if you do end up going. I normally get tacos when I eat there, as they are excellent. My friends all complain the portions are too small, which is probably true. I find them good enough for me. Regardless, the dishes are quite cheap so you can just order a lot of stuff if you have a big appetite. There are lots of interesting dishes to try on the menu. This place is definitely worth checking out.

I have been here several times now, and feel confident when I say it’s probably the best burger place in the city. (It’s also a nice pub.) You can get 6 different types of burgers (beef, lamb, chicken, veggie, turkey and pork), served with 35 different sets of toppings. For example, the burger I like the best, the “Bollywood Burger”, comes rubbed with tandori paste, and is served with mango chutney and yogurt. There are all sorts of strange and tasty burger choices. The sides are good too. (I usually get sweet potato fries, which are excellent.) I really can’t think of any other burger places that compare to this one.

I've been to Ciro's twice now, and enjoyed it both times. It seems a bit out of place at the corner of Bloor and Lansdowne, as there are no other bars like it in the area. It has a very large selection of beers, which are sold at fairly reasonable prices. The food is great, and very very cheap. You can't go wrong with that.
